Naval Station Annapolis

The primary mission of the station is to provide general support, including underway seamanship and sail training; small arms weapons familiarization; and navigation and engineering professional development, for midshipmen enrolled at the U.S. Naval Academy. To accomplish this, the command maintains a fleet of over 250 Yard Patrol and sail craft; operates an Industrial Repair Department consisting of electronics, hull, sail loft, carpentry shop, and rigging divisions; employs divers who ensure the underwater integrity of all operations; and provides more than 90 points of various competitive, combat, and general use pistol and rifle ranges.

Annapolis, MD

Annapolis is the capital of Maryland, a state of the United States of America. It is the closest state capital to Washington, DC. As of the 2000 census, its population is 35,838. It is the county seat of Anne Arundel County. The city is a part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. It is home to the United States Naval Academy and St. John's College.

First named Providence by the original Puritan settlers, the town was renamed Anne Arundel's Towne after the wife of Lord Baltimore. It was only in 1708 when Sir Francis Nicholson moved the capital of the royal colony there, that the town received the name which is holds today, Annapolis, named for Queen Anne, soon to be the monarch of all of Great Britain. After several decades as a wealthy seaport, Annapolis became the temporary capital of the United States after the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

The Maryland state house is the oldest in continuous legislative use in the union and it is topped by the largest wooden dome built without nails in the nation. It was in the Maryland state house that George Washington famously resigned his commission in the army. This building housed the workings of the government from 1783 to 1784. George Washington, who had argued vigorously for Annapolis to become the permanent home to the United States Capitol, had a strong attachment to the Maryland State house and instructed Pierre L'Enfant to model the dome of the Capitol building in Washington DC after it.

The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is an institution for the undergraduate education of officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Its campus is located in Annapolis, Maryland, on the banks of the Severn River. Students at the Naval Academy are referred to by their military rank (midshipman). Upon graduation, Naval Academy Midshipmen are commissioned as Ensigns in the U.S. Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps, and must serve a minimum of five years after their commissioning.
