Presidio of Monterey

In 1974, the DLI headquarters moved to the Presidio of Monterey. After all service language training was consolidated, the DLI was renamed the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) in 1976. DLIFLC was granted academic accreditation in 1978 and expanded in the 1980s. Instructor-to-student ratios increased, and with the introduction of advanced teaching techniques and information-age technology, average student language proficiency steadily increased. For many years, DLIFLC was a tenant activity on the Presidio of Monterey, and the Presidio was a sub-installation of the nearby Fort Ord. Fort Ord closed in 1994, and the Presidio of Monterey again became a separate installation, the DLIFLC and POM. The DLIFLC continues to evolve and expand its language course offerings in the wake of the end of the Cold War and to support the Global War on Terrorism.

Monterey, CA

For much of the city's history it was famous for the successful fishery in Monterey Bay. The famous Cannery Row has now been turned into a tourist attraction, with restaurants and shops in the historical site. In June 1967 the city was the venue of the Monterey Pop Festival. Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix were among those whose careers as Pop icons emerged at this historic concert.

The city is now famous for its abundant sea habitat, including kelp seaweed forests, sea otters and sea lions. It has one of the largest aquariums in North America, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and hosts several important marine science laboratories. Monterey's geographic location gives scientists access to the deep sea within hours.

The Old Customhouse, the Old Town Historic District, and the Royal Presidio Chapel are also National Historic Landmarks.

Monterey is the location of the Naval Postgraduate School and the Presidio of Monterey.
